There is no fixed definition of exhaustion, but it is a more severe version of fatigue. Everyone gets tired before bed, early in the morning, after a particularly hard exercise, or when they’ve been focusing on something mentally difficult for too long, but you shouldn’t be exhausted all the time. Express.co.uk spoke with nutritionist Clarissa Lenherr from the bioniq biohacking platform to find out why your fatigue could be a sign of something more serious.
Exhaustion or excessive fatigue can impact your mental health and mood as much as it does your body.
Clarissa said: “Have you noticed that your mood is changing a little more than usual? Do you have feelings of detachment, anxiety, or even depression?
“If the answer is yes, it could be triggered by exhaustion.
“When we are tired, we have less energy to react to stressors, which can lead to heightened emotions and responses.”
If you’ve noticed that these feelings have lasted for more than a month, Clarissa recommends that you contact your local GP.

Still tired after eight hours of sleep
You need seven to nine hours of sleep per night for your body and brain to function properly.
If you get enough sleep every night but don’t feel invigorated or energized and still feel sluggish, you might have a problem.
Clarissa said: “Also, if you don’t close your eyes enough because you have a hard time falling asleep, or if you do fall asleep but wake up in the middle of the night, it can contribute to your feelings of sleep. exhaustion.
“Everyone deserves a good night’s sleep, but sleep deprivation is a common problem. This can cause stress, which in turn can affect your energy level and mood. ”
The expert advises to introduce certain sleep hygiene practices to optimize your sleep, such as avoiding caffeine too late in the day, reducing electronic use at night and downloading filters that block blue light, as well as ‘Incorporate stress management into your bedtime routine.
If you’ve gained or lost weight significantly along with your fatigue, you’re probably exhausted or you might have some other underlying issue.
Clarissa said: “A bad night’s sleep can affect our weight, and when our body and mind are exhausted, we may find that our appetites change as well.
“For some, cravings for high-energy foods increase in response to a lack of energy. These high-energy foods tend to be fast-acting carbohydrates, sugar, and caffeine, and long-term consumption of these foods can lead to weight gain.
“Conversely, if you are constantly tired you may find that your appetite decreases, which can lead to unwanted weight loss.”
Go to your GP to discuss the problem and rule out other conditions such as an underactive thyroid, which can first lead to weight gain, fatigue, reduced mood, and brain fog.
Clarissa added: “Check your thyroid markers such as TSH and T4 and rule out nutritional deficiencies that might affect your hunger and satiety.”

Clarissa explained, “When your brain is exhausted, it becomes more difficult to think, reason and concentrate.
“Brain fog goes beyond the occasional sensation of the tip of the tongue and is often a collection of symptoms, including loss of clarity, changes in memory, poor focus, and poor concentration.”
The nutritionist suggests getting tested if it lasts longer than two weeks, as brain fog can be the result of an underactive thyroid, hormonal imbalances, gut health issues and nutritional deficiencies.
Changes in hair and skin
One of the most obvious signs of exhaustion is changes in your hair and skin.
Clarissa said, “With exhaustion we may find that our skin becomes drier, sullen, or prone to rashes and our hair can thin and start to fall out.
“If your exhaustion is stress related, it can strain the adrenal glands which produce many of our sex hormones.
“A change in sex hormones, especially DHEA and testosterone, can lead to a change in hair growth.”
Checking for nutritional deficiencies can rule out any underlying issues that might be causing your exhaustion and will allow you to supplement according to what your body needs.
