Rooibos tea: benefits include lowering cancer risk and lowering high blood pressure

 

Rooibos tea is made from the leaves of a shrub called Aspalathus linearis, which is typically grown on the west coast of South Africa. Herbal tea is packed with properties that researchers believe can strengthen the body’s defenses against heart disease and cancer. Evidence of health benefits has been listed in a see again conducted by the Cancer Association of South Africa charity.

High cholesterol and high blood pressure are precursors of heart disease.

Swedish researchers found that 30 and 60 minutes after drinking 400ml of Rooibos, ACE activity was significantly inhibited.

The research team could not demonstrate the same effect with green tea and black tea in the group of 17 healthy volunteers who participated in the study.

How to take it

Rooibos is available in the market in several forms.

Typically, Red Leaf Rooibos will be obtained either in its ordinary, unflavored form, or in a flavored or mixed form.

The Eatwell Guide shows that in order to eat a healthy, balanced diet, people should try to:

  • Eat at least five servings of a variety of fruits and vegetables each day
  • Base your meals on starchy foods high in fiber such as potatoes, bread, rice or pasta.
  • Eat beans, legumes, fish, eggs, meat, and other proteins
  • Choose unsaturated oils and spreads and consume them in small amounts
  • Drink plenty of fluids (at least six to eight glasses per day).

“If you eat foods and drinks high in fat, salt and sugar, eat them less often and in small amounts,” advises the food guide.

He advises choosing a variety of different foods from the top five food groups to get a wide range of nutrients.

Most Britons eat and drink too many calories, too much saturated fat, sugar and salt, and not enough fruits, vegetables, oily fish, or fiber.
